Pressed for Time? Pick Up One of These Short Story Collections

One of our favorite ways to incorporate reading into a busy season is by picking up a short story collection! Because authors are working within the limitations of short form, these stories must immerse readers into the complex lives of characters and settings from the very first page. Here are some of our recent favorites:

Nobody Gets Out Alive by Leigh Newman

Longlisted for the National Book Award and now out in paperback, this debut collection explores wild Alaska and the grit of the women who inhabit it through themes of friendship, survival, love, family, and addiction.

Games and Rituals by Katherine Heiny

A humorous new collection from the beloved author of Early Morning Riser.

Thrillville, USA by Taylor Koekkoek

Another debut collection set in the Pacific Northwest featuring characters living on the margins of society and addressing themes of substance abuse and dysfunctional relationships.

White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link

A unique blend of realism and the speculative, these seven stories are reinvented fairy tales set in modern times.

Call and Response by Gothataone Moeng

A collection of stories set in contemporary Botswana exploring family and community.
