Author Snapshot: Kaira Rouda
Book jacket biographies don’t tell us nearly enough about the authors we love. That’s why Zibby Mag launched the Author Snapshot, giving readers an inside look at the lives and work of our favorite writers.
This week we’re spotlighting Kaira Rouda, a USA Today, Amazon Charts, and international bestselling author. The Widow, a novel about marriage, secrets, and privilege set in the political world of Washington, D.C., released just this week. Be sure to check out the essay Kaira wrote for Zibby Mag about the Widow’s Mandate, which served as part of the inspiration for The Widow!
What inspired you to write The Widow?
The Widow was inspired by my husband’s time campaigning and serving in Congress. I had two years of immersion in the hectic, fascinating, historic, and cut-throat world of D.C. I loved every minute of it! The "Widow's Mandate," the unofficial tradition where women are either appointed or elected to fill their late husbands' Congressional seats, was also a major inspiration. I met so many amazing fellow Congressional spouses during our time in D.C. and realized how much they are involved in their partners’ political ambitions—and who only knows what they could do if they served, too.
What books are on your nightstand right now?
Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh—a comforting favorite.
On Writing by Stephen King
The It Girl by Ruth Ware
Where is your go-to place to write?
My office, with a view of the ocean, and my dog, Tucker, curled up in his bed nearby. It’s my happy place.
What is your favorite Indie bookstore?
Laguna Beach Books is my hometown indie bookstore.
What are three books you'd recommend readers start after The Widow?
If you’re inspired by The Widow, consider these political thrillers and/or these books set in D.C.!
